T-Minus Thirty Days

My family is definitely a bit odd in the sense that nobody takes the slightest notice of me traipsing around in a 20 pound weight vest and sub-zero mountaineering boots on Tuesday night. Clad in only running shorts, a t-shirt, and said mountaineering gear, I am making an effort to break in the stiff new shoes. The vest is for working out, making the already-killer incline exercises even harder. As we sit and watch the New Hampshire Primary, occasionally trying to make witty comments about Trump, I flex my feet inside the boots. In about a month, I’m thinking, these are going to be my street shoes. I’m going to ditch the weight vest for a down coat, and trade the salmon we had for dinner for freeze dried, half frozen meals. I close my eyes for a minute, and imagine where the journey is going to take me. I can’t believe it. Will I be able to hack it in the ultimate testing ground for mountaineers? Is six weeks away from my family too much? What if I realize that this is what I want to do with my life? What does a city-kid do then? Thoughts of the trip are constantly spinning through my head; excitement, apprehension, fear. Everything was starting to feel very real. I just hoped I was ready.
Next week I head to Idaho to meet up with the team. Melissa, Ty, Syd, and I are going to stay up in Stanley, where I will be taking my AIARE Level 2 Avalanche Course. I am beyond psyched. Besides being a bad-ass mountaineer, Melissa is one of the most inspiring people I know. It’s a treat just to get to spend a few days with her, let alone six weeks. We will be spending four days in the Sawtooth Mountains going over snow science, emergency rescue procedures, and avalanche safety. After that, I head back to SF for the final weeks of training, and then it’s off to the big mountains!

Been reading all ur entries. Awesome prep. Interested in what you’ve had to do to train. What’s ur workout–cardio on what for how long intervals etc. and weights, what type and intervals?

    1. Hi! My sprint workout is 20 seconds on/10 seconds off on the treadmill set to 11.0- I do that 8 times. Or, I’ll do an incline workout which is a pyramid type thing (also on treadmill) w/ 25 lb. weight vest. Leg/Arm workouts are different movements with free weights interspersed with core. I’ll do the circuit four times for both. I end with either a finisher (throwing medicine ball) or 8 minute abs (old 90s video). Long Cardio is mostly soccer, as I play on a competitive team. I also hike, ski tour, and snowshoe. The whole program is 16 weeks long. Thanks for your question!
